Welcome to Your Jiu Jitsu Journey
in Spring Valley, Las Vegas!

Thinking about starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in Las Vegas? Whether you’re looking for self-defense, fitness, or a new challenge, stepping onto the mats for the first time can feel intimidating. At Potential Jiu Jitsu in Spring Valley, Las Vegas, we welcome beginners of all backgrounds and experience levels. This guide will help you know exactly what to expect so you can walk in confident and ready to train.

What to Wear to Your First Jiu Jitsu Class in Las Vegas

Your attire depends on whether you’re training Gi or No-Gi Jiu Jitsu.

✔️ Gi Class – Wear a Jiu Jitsu gi and belt (we can provide a loaner if you don’t have one).

✔️ No-Gi Class – Wear a rash guard and athletic shorts (no pockets or zippers for safety).

✔️ Hygiene Matters – Trim your nails, wear deodorant, and bring flip-flops to wear off the mat.

If you’re in Las Vegas and need Jiu Jitsu gear, we can help! Visit our academy or ask about beginner packages that include a gi and belt.

What Happens in Your First Jiu Jitsu Class?

1️⃣ Warm-Up & Mobility Drills

Before learning techniques, you’ll start with light stretching, movement drills, and basic coordination exercises to prepare your body.

2️⃣ Learning the Fundamentals

Your instructor will guide you through basic positions, escapes, and submissions. Expect a hands-on approach, with step-by-step demonstrations followed by partner practice.

3️⃣ Drilling & Partner Work

You’ll pair up with a training partner to practice techniques in a controlled setting. This helps develop muscle memory and confidence.

4️⃣ Live Rolling (Optional for Beginners)

Rolling is Jiu Jitsu’s version of sparring, where you practice techniques against a resisting partner. Beginners typically observe or do positional training first before full rolling.

Common Concerns (And Why You Don’t Need to Worry)

💬 “Do I need to be in shape to start Jiu Jitsu?”

No! Jiu Jitsu naturally builds fitness, so don’t worry about being in peak condition before starting.

💬 “Will I get hurt?”

Jiu Jitsu is one of the safest martial arts because it emphasizes control over striking. Tapping out prevents injuries.

💬 “What if I feel overwhelmed?”

That’s normal! Jiu Jitsu has a learning curve, but every black belt started as a beginner. Stick with it, and you’ll improve quickly.
